Garden City

“To-Morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform” describes a utopia city made to bring bring people to coexist with nature. The Garden City Movement is an excellent and genius way to both solve problem associated and enhance the lives of a community. Ebenezer Howard displays this serene lifestyle through his Garden City plans. This mixture of a town and city life meets in the middle to bring the positive aspects of both lifestyle. When trying to come up with ways to improve this utopia it was a bit difficult. Nature is a way to improve and heal so having it remain the core central part of the plan and brings together the city nicely. The concepts through the plan is well thought out and the order is already idea. Leaving this the same, I was able to come up with a few changes to improve other aspects.

Water is a necessity for us to successfully occupy a location Its like how Rome consists of aqueducts that made the expansion of their city possible. Instead of aqueducts I added a water system into the plan. through streams that reaches midway into the city and is very beneficial. The stream gives you a water source available close by and be able to reclaim and filter water for the residence. The layout worked well with having the inward organization starting with industrial to residential and so on so this stood the same in my modified version. The population continues to grow so to incorporate more housing while maintaining the implication of nature I took the idea of having courtyards like in the Barcelona plan. The center is used for resources and green recreational areas as a way to bring the people together towards the center while the outer area of the plan is industrial and residential focused. As you progress toward the middle of the plan the serenity of the city starts to become more defined.

Problems like expansion and transportation were not really looked at as a “problem” for me. With incoming population growth it can cause some commotion but my logical solution is to continue this circular expansion while keeping peoples needs in mind. If you keep this organization growing within a pattern and always incorporate industrial and green spaces people will always have the necessities close by and keep the main idea of the city flowing. Transportation wise, Howard’s public transportation method is great. With a dense population an overflow of cars and pollution begins to pour in. If you restrict it to the train lines it will stop that from happening and also can be beneficial. Aside from lower pollution rates, during emergency situation having this set transporting line can lower the chaos of bumper to bumper evacuation along with the not too good driving skills of some people especially while being under pressure of whatever emergency is taking place. With these train lines there will be order and less accidents with the movement of people in, out, and around.
